The church was first described as the Ecclesia de Donetynin it the rolls of the Papal Taxation of Ireland for the Rural Deanery of Ardfert Dioceses for the years 1291-1300.  As an early medieval church which ministered to the furthest reach of the country, it would have been more utilitarian than grand.  Based on the structural remains of other similar period churches from Tralee to Dun Choain, it probably was a modest, stone building rectangular in shape with an open interior with no separation between the chancel and nave.
